Do you want to equip yourself with a natural duvet in order to sleep in ideal comfort conditions? The most popular fillings are goose down and duck down. If you're undecided between the two, here's what you need to know about duck or goose down comforters.
Why choose a down-filled duvet?
Down duvets are very popular because they have a large number of advantages:
-
They are soft and plump.
-
It is light and warm duvets .
-
They have a filling that is natural, durable and ecological.
Goose down and duck down are fillings known for their loft. In fact, they settle very little over time and retain their volume while allowing good air circulation.
Down makes for a lightweight duvet that retains heat well. It is therefore very suitable if you live in a cold region or if you are naturally chilly.
Natural filling is more durable over time than synthetic filling. As a result, you will keep your down duvet for at least 10 years, compared to around 5 years for a synthetic duvet. It is also an eco-friendly filling, as goose down and duck down are both natural and biodegradable. Duck down, however, is considered more durable, being less expensive to produce than goose down.
What are the differences between the two types of down?
The insulating and thermoregulatory properties of goose down and duck down are essentially the same. One of the major differences is the number of down flakes that will go into the composition of a product, whether it is a duvet or a pillow. The goose being a larger bird than the duck, its down also has larger dimensions and less is needed to obtain a high-performance duvet. Goose down therefore makes it possible to obtain particularly light and warm products.
As for duck down , it is very breathable, which ensures good moisture evacuation. It is therefore well suited to people who tend to sweat at night. Choose down of French origin which offers excellent value for money and make sure that it is new and not recycled. In fact, recycled down is less efficient and less durable.
What concentration for a down duvet?
Natural duvets and pillows are never filled with 100% down. Indeed, it is a rare product since it is taken from restricted areas of birds: on the stomach and under the wings. This is why we complete the filling with feathers. The down concentration should therefore be checked at the time of your purchase, because the higher it is, the softer the duvet.
When can you use a down comforter?
Down filling can be suitable for all seasons:
-
Spring and fall: these are cooler seasons, but not yet very cold. So opt for a duvet with a medium weight and which will offer you sufficient warmth without being too heavy.
-
In winter: when it is very cold, you need a thicker duvet. Choose a warm duvet or a “winter duvet” with high thermal insulation.
-
In summer: we appreciate a light duvet with less loft. Opt for a “summer duvet” to benefit from good insulation without being too hot.
