Silk, bamboo, linen, cotton, microfibers: do you want to know what is the best material for soft hotel-like sheets? Here is a short guide to help you choose the bed linen that suits you best.
The best material choices for soft and comfortable sheets
Pure cotton sheets
Cotton is frequently used for making household linens and especially sheets. This plant material combines lightness and resistance while being able to absorb moisture. At Bonsoirs, we offer ranges made from 100% long fiber cotton, also known as Egyptian cotton. This prestigious fabric is appreciated for its sturdiness and excellent washability. It allows different weaves, including percale, flannel and satin.
Cotton percale sheets
Cotton percale sheets are a perfect choice for hot summer nights. These bed linens are distinguished by their beautiful matte appearance and their smooth finish guaranteeing excellent comfort at night. Their quality depends on the number of threads woven perpendicularly. The higher it is, the stronger and softer the fabric.
Our cotton percale sheets have an optimal weave of 120 threads per square centimeter, twice as much as standard quality cotton (57 threads per square centimeter). You will love curling up in it in the evening when you get home. Endowed with an incredible softness, these bed linens also benefit from the OEKO-TEX® label. Thanks to this certification, you have the assurance of enjoying articles free of undesirable substances (pesticides, allergenic dyes, etc.).
Warm and silky, our cotton percale sheets are easy to care for. Just select a program at 40°C and you're done. In case of heavy soiling, it is possible to go up to 60°C. To maintain the softness of the fibers, use a mild, natural detergent. On the drying side, favor the open air avoiding direct exposure to the sun's rays which can affect the quality of the fabric. Finally, iron your sheets while still slightly damp, preferably inside out, to protect the colors.
Note: if you dry your linens in the washing machine, opt for wool dryer balls which are a reasonable alternative to plastic models.
Cotton flannel sheets
Cotton flannel, commonly called "pilou", is ideal in winter. This fabric, similar to fleece, is characterized by its fluffy appearance, its comforting side and its excellent resistance over time. Lightly brushed on one or both sides, the cotton flannel sheet guarantees an extra layer of warmth on the coldest nights of the year. Resistant to wear and bacteria, this bed linen is easily machine washed at 40°C, preferably with a gentle programme. As soon as the wash cycle is finished, air dry it on a clothesline to prevent wrinkles from forming.
Cotton sateen sheets
Cotton sateen has, as its name suggests, a beautiful satin appearance. However, contrary to popular belief, it does not slip. So you don't risk falling out of bed in the middle of the night! Bright and warm, our cotton sateen sheets owe their incomparable softness to a dense and tight weave (between 120 threads/cm² and up to 200 threads). Their delicate touch immediately makes you want to join the arms of Morpheus.
Note: before first use, we advise you to carry out a first cold wash at 30°C, without fabric softener or detergent. For the following washes, opt for a cycle at 40°C then natural drying in the open air or in the dryer at moderate temperature.
linen sheets
If you are looking for a material that can adapt to all seasons, then linen is for you. This thermo-regulating fabric keeps cool in summer and retains heat in winter. Enough to benefit from a restful sleep night after night.
At Bonsoirs, we can't resist the timeless style of washed linen. We love its incomparable softness, its elegant shades and its delicately crumpled appearance. Hypoallergenic and antibacterial, our washed linen sheets are suitable for all skin types, even the most sensitive. With very good absorption capacities, they are also suitable for heavy sweating sleepers.
The icing on the cake, our washed linen bed linens get better with time. Not only do they not deform under the effect of frequent washing, but they have the property of becoming more beautiful over time.
Silk sheets
Silk is a textile material of animal origin. Its quality is determined by the momme, i.e. its weight in g/m². The higher it is, the thicker the web. A density of 108 g/m², corresponding to 25 momme, suggests quality bed linen.
Rich in protein and amino acids, the silk sheet helps limit the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hypoallergenic and antibacterial, it prevents irritation or redness due to repeated rubbing. This is why it is particularly recommended for sensitive, reactive or acne-prone skin.
Very delicate, the silk sheet requires special care to prolong its life. Table on a dry or hand wash, with natural detergents and at low temperature. If the instructions indicate, you can put it in the washing machine on a delicate cycle at a maximum of 30°C and put it in a protective net.
bamboo sheets
Also known as "breathable fiber", bamboo is a plant material like linen. Its cultivation requires much less water than that of standard cotton and does not require fertilizers or pesticides. Once transformed into viscose, bamboo fibers give soft, silky and resistant fabrics.
The bamboo sheet is characterized by air permeability and high moisture absorption. Hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, it is the ideal solution for people with allergies.
This bedding retains its new, wrinkle-free appearance even after many washes. However, its maintenance is more delicate than cotton. You should not exceed 40 degrees for a machine cycle. Also be careful not to use bleach or chlorine, at the risk of discoloring your bamboo sheet.
Microfiber sheets
Prized for their attractive price, microfiber sheets are made of a mixture of polyester and polyamide. Like cotton bed linens, the higher their thread count, the softer and lighter they are. Microfiber sheets wash easily, dry quickly and do not require ironing.
Particularly resistant to wear, they can last for years (2 to 3 years without any problem). However, they have major drawbacks. Microfiber sheets do not let the skin breathe. They retain odors, are flammable and their production is not environmentally friendly, since polyester is a petroleum derivative.
But then, what is the best material for soft and comfortable sheets?
In our opinion, it's all a matter of taste. Each sleeper has their own expectations. In any case, choose a healthy material that is safe for your health and for the planet.
