Do your pillows need a little cleaning? In some cases, machine washing a pillow is not recommended. Latex pillow, polyester pillow, down pillow, when should you avoid machine washing?

Why is washing your pillow regularly important?

Are you reluctant to put your favorite pillow in the wash? If you want to keep it for a long time, you will have to part with it overnight. Eh yes ! Washing a pillow will benefit you (and it) for more than one reason.

To combat the proliferation of mites

Do you sometimes wake up from a dream completely sweating, or with a bit of saliva in the corner? The problem is that these fluids are absorbed by your pillowcase and cushion. A fertile breeding ground for the proliferation of bacteria, mites and other tiny critters... To avoid developing an allergy and sleep in a 100% safe environment, cleaning is therefore obligatory.

To eliminate odors and bring freshness to your pillow

Clean bedding is the guarantee of a great night's sleep. A well-cleaned pillow is a fresh pillow with no bad odor and all it takes is a machine wash, or a hand wash for nights like in a hotel, 365 days a year!

Improve the lifespan of your pillow

Contrary to popular belief, regular and careful maintenance of your bed linen guarantees its lifespan. Your pillow is no exception to the rule. With regular washing, you improve its durability. With a few little tricks, like putting a tennis ball in the drum, you will even be able to give it some fluff again.

Washing your pillow in the machine: a good idea?

There are different methods for washing your dirty pillows , as not all of them are machine washable. To choose the best one, it's simple, you have to pay attention to the filling of the cushion. Down pillow, latex pillow, synthetic pillow, we give you our best maintenance tips.

Machine washing a feather or down pillow

A 100% natural feather and down pillow can be washed in the washing machine without any problem, but still take some precautions. Choose a temperature between 30°C and 40°C, and above all, avoid spinning. When tumble drying, read the directions on the product label to avoid damaging it. Hand washing and dry cleaning (baking soda, soda crystals) are also good alternatives for caring for your pillow.

Machine washing a memory foam pillow

If you have opted for a memory foam pillow, it is not possible to put it in the machine. In fact, it is made of viscoelastic foam which reacts to body heat. When machine-washed, the pillow risks losing its heat-sensitive properties. Remember to maintain it anyway. Start by dusting and airing the cushion every day. The fresh air will eliminate a lot of the bacteria. Then, wash the pillow protector and its case at least every 15 days. So you sleep with a very cool and super comfortable pillow!

Machine Washing a Latex Pillow

It is best not to wash a pillow with latex filling. A delicate material, latex risks losing its firmness and elastic properties when machine-washed. We advise you to opt for a latex pillow with a removable cover and only clean the latter.

Machine washing a synthetic pillow

The synthetic pillow can be machine washed
. Cold wash, no or little spinning, follow the same instructions as for the down or feather pillow. Remember to take a look at the product label to make sure you are not choosing an unsuitable program.

Machine washing pillows: our latest advice

To make machine cleaning your pillows more effective, there are some very useful techniques that we will present to you right away.

The tennis ball in the drum

To keep your pillow fluffy, place a tennis ball in the drum of the washing machine. During the cycle, it will hit and bounce on the cushion, which will smooth it, soften it and restore its natural shape. An effective solution that will save you a little laundry.

3/4 filling

When washing your pillow, make sure the machine drum is 3/4 full. In this way, the cushion will not be damaged by rubbing against the walls of the drum. This is very important so as not to prematurely wear out your bedding accessory.

Air drying

During washing, pillows tend to become soaked with water. It is therefore very important, especially for a natural down pillow, to dry it 100% before putting it back in your bed. This will prevent you from bad odors and, above all, the proliferation of dust mites. Choose drying in the open air and in the sun if possible. You can also opt for a drying program (unless contraindicated by the manufacturer).

How often should you wash a pillow?

Whether you have opted for machine washing or hand washing, regular maintenance is necessary. If you have a feather or down pillow, washing every 6 months is sufficient. It should not be damaged by too frequent trips in the machine. With a synthetic pillow , you can do a deep cleaning every 2 months. Be careful though, if you tend to sweat a lot, you can go as far as washing it monthly.
