Fitted sheet vs. flat sheet

We usually talk about flat sheets and fitted sheets by differentiating them. In reality, these two types of sheets are not opposed to each other, but complement each other! We tell you everything.

What is a fitted sheet?

The fitted sheet or bottom sheet is designed to fit the shape of your mattress and hold in place on your bedding. In fact, the elastic band sewn into its hem keeps the sheet on the mattress even in the event of a very restless night. Previously made from linen (for high-end sheets) or hemp (for lower quality sheets), fitted sheets are today mainly made from cotton. The size of a fitted sheet is easy to calculate since it is the same as that of your mattress. Only one thing to take into account: the thickness of your mattress which will guide you on which fitted sheet to choose.

What is a flat sheet?

The flat sheet is a large piece of fabric, much larger than the mattress, which is placed under a duvet cover or under a blanket, hence its common name of top sheet. Unlike the fitted sheet, it does not have elastic to adjust to the corners of the mattress.

Of all the elements making up bed linen, it is the oldest. Indeed, the flat sheet existed long before the fitted sheet and the duvet cover. In the past, it was only washed once or twice a year and was used as both a bottom sheet and a top sheet.

The width of a flat sheet is much more important than the size of your mattress, because the flat sheet protrudes on each side of the bed in order to fall elegantly or to be placed under the mattress: to each their own. In the latter case, we speak of edged cloth.

The same goes for the length of your flat sheet which is much greater than the length of your mattress. In fact, the flat sheet is bordered at the bottom of the bed. At the top of the bed, it folds over your blanket or duvet cover, leaving a special place for your pillow.
