Silk bed linen is very popular for its elegance and softness. Like any other fabric, however, it needs regular maintenance so that it keeps its beautiful appearance for longer. This is why in this article, we give you all the tips for properly washing your silk pillowcase .
Why choose a silk pillowcase?
Nothing feels better than sleeping with your face and hair snuggled into silk. Recognized for its thermoregulatory properties, this natural fiber has the advantage of letting the skin breathe, while maintaining freshness during summer and warmth in winter. It is therefore suitable for all seasons.
In addition, it limits the proliferation of mites and bacteria. It is also not very absorbent, which preserves the skin's hydration. Finally, it would prevent the appearance of wrinkles and frizz in the hair.
Contrary to popular belief, silk is a very resistant fiber. However, it tends to retain moisture and it is therefore necessary to take some precautions when washing.
What are the different ways to wash a silk pillowcase?
As with other elements of bed linen, the silk pillowcase can also be washed by hand or in the machine.
Hand washing
Washing your silk pillowcase by hand is the most recommended method along with dry cleaning. To do this, immerse the fabric in cold or lukewarm water at a temperature below 30°C. To remove stains and dirt, use a detergent for delicate textiles or a detergent specific for silk and with a neutral pH, regardless of the density of the fiber. The latter is measured in Momme and generally varies between 16 and 25.
When washing, do not soak your pillowcase for too long and use delicate movements, without twisting or wringing the product too vigorously. Then rinse it with clean water.
Machine washing
In general, we recommend not putting a silk pillowcase with a Momme lower than 20 in the washing machine. On the other hand, if it is higher, this means that the density of the product is sufficient for machine washing and that your pillowcase will not come out damaged. However, you will have to choose a short and delicate program , at low temperature. It is also advisable to place your pillowcase in a mesh laundry bag to protect it as much as possible from the wear generated by this type of wash.
Here's what you should definitely not do when washing your silk pillowcase in the machine:
- Use a washing powder or a detergent that contains bleaching agents, as this may completely or partially bleach it;
- Use bleach.
Whatever washing method you choose for this delicate fabric , read the product label carefully and follow the instructions on it.
How do you dry a silk pillowcase?
Air drying is strongly recommended. You can either lay out your pillowcase or dry it flat on a towel. At any rate :
- Avoid the dryer at all costs, even gentle programs;
- Do not dry your pillowcase in direct sunlight or too close to a heat source;
- Never wring your pillowcases so as not to damage the silk fiber and make it lose its shine.
How to iron a silk pillowcase?
It is best to iron your silk pillowcase, inside out, immediately after washing. Avoid steam irons at all costs, as they may stain the fabric. Please note that most irons have a special silk program, and it is therefore recommended to use it. If your iron does not have one, choose the gentlest program.
How often to wash a silk pillowcase?
Silk bed linen and pillowcases should be washed at the same frequency as those made from other fabrics, i.e. approximately every 10 days. Additionally, you can wait up to two weeks if you wash every night before bed or sleep in your pajamas.
What are the alternatives to silk pillowcases?
Are you looking for a pillowcase that is even softer and easier to care for than silk? Why not opt for cotton satin, washed linen or washed cotton percale? These natural textiles are very pleasant to the touch and are particularly comfortable.
Cotton satin
Satin has a feel that is very close to that of silk. Made from very long cotton fibers, it is indeed very soft and has a slightly shiny look, which makes it very elegant.
Washed linen
Washed linen is recognized by its softness which intensifies over time and by its slightly wrinkled appearance, which gives it great nobility. Very practical, it does not require any ironing. At Bonsoirs, the linen we use comes from Normandy and has been selected for its high quality.
Washed cotton percale
Washed cotton percale has the advantage of being both fresh and light. It has a matte and slightly wrinkled effect, which will bring a chic and relaxed touch to your room. At Bonsoirs, we offer you quality percale bed linen, 100% organic and GOTS certified.
