Sleep on your back, on your stomach, on your side? What is the best sleeping position to adopt to make the most of your nights? Good evening, the expert in high-end bed linen offers you all his sleep advice.
What is the best sleeping position?
There are not thousands of sleeping positions . There are only 3: the position on the back, on the side and on the stomach.
Sleeping on your stomach: the sleeping position to avoid
It is recommended not to sleep on your stomach , as this can have adverse health effects. Sleeping on your stomach can have disadvantages and affect breathing and digestion, but also cause tension in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar region. This leads to headaches, neck pain and back pain.
In addition, sleeping on your stomach sometimes leaves marks on the face, because the latter is pressed against the pillow for a long time.
However, if this is the position you enjoy the most for sleeping, and it does not affect you in any way, no problem!
We advise you, however, to opt for a flat pillow or not to use a pillow at all. This minimizes pressure on the neck and reduces the risk of muscle pain and tension. Also add our soft Bonsoirs pillow under the belly to avoid too firm contact with the mattress. It's a habit to get into that will allow you to have good spinal alignment.
Sleeping on your back: the best position, but not for everyone
Sleeping on your back has several advantages. This position helps maintain the natural alignment of the spine. This is not the case of the position on the stomach.
It also allows for better digestion (reduction of stomach reflux symptoms), improved breathing and blood circulation.
On the other hand, this is not a position to be recommended for snorers. The problem does not concern them, it is rather for their spouse. This position on the back tends to promote snoring.
If you want to sleep on your back, opt for a pillow that is neither too high nor too low and with sufficient support. Our firm pillows have a weight perfectly adapted to the position on the back.
Sleeping on the side: an ideal position (but with certain precautions)
Sleeping on your side is one of the most common sleeping positions. It may offer health benefits:
-
A reduction in snoring and sleep apnea.
-
Back pain relief.
-
Improved digestion.
-
Less risk of acid reflux.
-
Pressure relief on the shoulders and hips.
-
The ideal posture for pregnant women.
When sleeping on your side, it's important to keep your head and neck aligned with your spine. That's why you should choose a pillow model that fills the space between your head and your shoulders and keeps your spine straight. Avoid sleeping without a pillow in this position.
What advice to improve your sleep?
To improve the quality of your sleep, it's not just your position that you need to take into account. Also equip yourself with healthy, comfortable and quality bedding such as Bonsoirs bedding accessories. To reduce the firmness of your mattress, for example, opt for our ecological mattress topper .
Also try to go to bed and wake up at fixed times, to avoid screens at least 1 hour before going to bed and to sleep in a room at a good temperature (between 17 and 20°C). These little habits should significantly improve your sleep.
If you don't see results, also try various herbal teas like chamomile, take cold (or fresh at first) showers before going to bed, practice meditation.
The quality of sleep is an essential element for good health, so make every effort to improve it.
