Linen is a natural material that we choose more and more often for our bed linen. However, there are two categories, each of which has its own specificities. Here is the difference between linen and washed linen .

What are the characteristics of washed linen?

Washed linen is raw linen that has been washed many times at high temperatures and treated with eco-friendly softening products. This process is called “linen stripping”. Then the linen is drum dried. This treatment softens and softens the fiber and makes the fabric lighter, making contact with the skin much more pleasant. This is therefore advantageous for all pieces of bed linen (sheet, duvet cover , pillowcase, etc.) as well as for clothing.

Washed linen also has the advantage of continuing to soften and become softer over time while being very durable. You will therefore be able to keep the textiles made from it for many years.

What are the differences between raw linen and washed linen?

Washed linen has many advantages over raw linen:

  • It is characterized by a slightly wrinkled appearance which is very aesthetic.

  • It retains its qualities over time, which is not the case with raw linen which tends to stiffen.

  • Stains are easier to remove from washed linen because it can be cleaned at high temperatures. It supports programs at 60°C as well as the tumble dryer very well, which is not the case for raw linen which is much more fragile.

  • It does not need ironing, if you still want to do so, turn it inside out and never iron it dry so as not to damage the fibers.

  • Washed linen bed linen is available in a wide variety of colors and you are sure to find products that enhance your decoration.

How to properly maintain washed linen?

Although washed linen is durable, you must still follow a few rules regarding its maintenance in order to keep it for a long time. When washing, don't mix it with synthetic fibers, otherwise you may end up with sheets full of lint. The material has the advantage of not shrinking and of resisting high temperatures (which is not the case for raw linen). You can therefore wash it at 60°C, which will kill dust mites and therefore limit the risk of allergies.

If your laundry is colored, use a neutral detergent that does not contain bleaching agents. Do not hesitate to use white vinegar as a softener to revive the colors. And if they are white linen sheets, the latter will have a yellowing effect. As for spinning, it must be moderate (600 revolutions per minute). Finally, to ensure that your washed linen duvet cover keeps its fullness, do not overload the washing machine drum.

For drying, you will have the choice between putting your washed linen flat sheets in the dryer or hanging them out in the open air. Tumble drying will also have the advantage of softening it even more.

Finally, be aware that it is much easier to remove stains from washed linen than from raw linen. Indeed, the latter is more delicate, because it is untreated. On the other hand, since linen can be washed at high temperatures, most stains disappear. If any remains, you can scrub them with soapy water or baking soda.
