Do you want to equip yourself with a natural duvet, filled with feathers or down and do you want to know the differences between these two types of filling? We have analyzed all their characteristics for you so that you can choose between a feather or down duvet .
What are the characteristics of these two types of filling?
The filling influences the lightness, warmth and comfort of a duvet. It is therefore necessary to choose carefully according to your sleeping habits and your expectations.
Down
Down is very fine plumage which is collected from the belly or under the wings of the duck or goose. It allows you to obtain a light , soft and very insulating duvet . If you need a warm winter duvet, down filling seems to be ideal. On the other hand, it is rarer than the feather and therefore more expensive to purchase. In fact, it is only taken from a small part of the birds, which is not the case for the feather.
Feather
The feather is taken from the upper back and wings of birds. It is heavier than down, has a flat shape and has a rod that sometimes passes through the duvet shell. If you like to feel a feeling of weight on your body when you sleep, this is the natural filling to choose. Although less insulating than down, it still retains heat very well. Finally, be aware that it is less durable over time than the latter.
When it comes to thermoregulation, know that down is the most efficient. It helps to counterbalance the slight drop in body temperature that occurs when you fall asleep and allows good heat evacuation throughout the night.
The difference between goose down and duck down
A down duvet can be filled with duck down or goose down which do not have quite the same characteristics. In fact, goose down lets air circulate better than duck down, so duvets filled with it are more fluffy and retain heat better. They are also lighter, because they require less filling per m² for an equivalent level of warmth.
Why choose a feather or down duvet?
Compared to a synthetic duvet , duvets filled with feathers or down have significant loft, because the filling does not settle over time. Duvets incorporating natural fillings are also more durable and can be kept for up to 10 years if taken care of. Finally, by opting for a natural duvet, you will be optimally protected from the cold and benefit from good breathability and comfort, like birds covered in feathers and down.
What other criteria should you take into account when choosing your natural duvet?
Other criteria to take into account when choosing your duvet:
-
The dimensions which must of course be adapted to those of your bed. For example, for a double bed of 160 x 200 cm, it is advisable to choose a duvet of 240 x 260 cm which will allow you to have a fall of 40 cm on each side of the bed and therefore to sleep two in ideal comfort conditions. Do not hesitate to allow for a slightly larger overhang if you move a lot or if you are of large build.
-
The finishes and colors that should match the other elements of your bedding.
-
The material of the cover which can be made of cotton percale, flannel, wool, etc.
-
The weight which will define the lightness of your duvet.
-
Whether your duvet has a removable cover or not.
If you are prone to allergies, know that it is better to choose a feather duvet. And if you are also reactive to these, you will need to opt for a synthetic and anti-allergy treated model.
How to properly maintain a natural duvet?
You can wash your feather or down duvet in the washing machine if the capacity of the latter is sufficient. Otherwise, you will have to go to a laundromat equipped with large capacity machines or to the dry cleaners. In any case, choose a delicate program at 40°C, use a small quantity of mild detergent and avoid fabric softener. To keep your duvet fluffy, you can add 1 or 2 tennis balls to the drum. Finally, dry it in the open air, shaking it from time to time, so that the filling returns to its place evenly. If you want to put it in the dryer, select the lowest heat (feel free to also add a few tennis balls for fluff).
A few words about synthetic duvets
Synthetic duvets are most often made of polyester fibers, but there are also products that are made of hollow, full or even silicone fibers, to choose depending on whether you want a softer, more fluffy product as well as depending on of your budget. The advantage of synthetic fillings is that they are anti-allergy and they make it possible to obtain particularly light products. They are also very easy to maintain since they can be put in the washing machine and dryer without any problem. On the other hand, their lifespan is less than products filled with feathers or down. You will actually keep them for 5 years on average compared to 10 years for a good natural duvet.
