No more summer nights with just one sheet covering your body. The freshness is definitely there and little by little, the thermometer is going down. If there is a time when the feeling of cold is particularly unpleasant, it is at night. To avoid this and preserve your sleep, a warm winter duvet is the solution. How to choose it well? Here are our tips.

Should you use a synthetic or natural duvet for winter?

Made from duck or goose down, feathers and plumes, natural duvets are known for being light and fluffy. These duvets offer very interesting natural thermal protection. If you want a warm duvet, opt for a high down percentage. Moreover, the higher this percentage, the greater the fluffiness of the duvet will be (this is the same for a pillow!). A good thickness of this natural filling provides exceptional softness to your duvet. But this softness will still depend on the quality of the down. Another advantage of the natural duvet is that it lasts over time.

Synthetic duvets also compete perfectly with natural duvets. Made from polyester or other synthetic fibers, they are generally less expensive than their natural counterparts.

You will have understood, to choose your warm winter duvet, natural or synthetic duvets may be perfectly suitable. It is above all the weight of the filling of your duvet that must be taken into account.

What is the minimum weight for a warm winter duvet?

Do you want a very warm 220x240 duvet? A very warm 260x240 duvet? Nothing's easier. To do this, choose:

  • A quality weight ranging from 270 g/m2 to 300 g/m2 for a natural duvet,
  • A weight of between 300 and 450 g/m2 for a synthetic duvet.

Are you cold? Then opt for an ultra warm 750 gr/m2 duvet. From 500g/m2, the duvet is considered ultra warm. The weight indication therefore represents a perfect heat index. Please note that certain labels guarantee you high quality filling.

Finally, a little advice: if you heat your room to a temperature above 18°C, there is no point in equipping yourself with a winter duvet, because these duvets are designed for rooms with very little heating.

Should you opt for a four-season duvet?

An interesting alternative to the winter duvet is the 4-season duvet! This is actually made up of two duvets: a light duvet and a mid-season duvet, tied to each other. Assembled, your two duvets constitute a very warm duvet suitable for cocooning. Separate, one is suitable for mid-season use and the other for summer use. A single duvet for the whole year and for all seasons, it's smart!

Other elements to take into account when choosing your warm winter duvet

The stitching

A good filling density is desirable, but this filling must remain homogeneous on your duvet. To do this, remember to find out about the type and quality of the stitching. For example, for a natural duvet, partitioned tile stitching is recommended because it perfectly contains feathers, especially during washing. In this regard, did you know that proper maintenance of your duvet will allow it to maintain its thermal performance?

The size of the duvet

A sufficiently falling duvet is also a point not to neglect when you are looking for warmth. Large overhangs prevent sleepers from finding themselves exposed during the night. So choose the size of the winter duvet carefully. To avoid air ingress, make sure you have a duvet that exceeds 40 cm on each side of your mattress. So, a 240x260 winter duvet will be perfect for a 160 cm wide double bed. For the same bed, a 220x240 duvet will not prevent air intakes during the night.

In summary: the larger the duvet, the better it is for staying warm!
