The good smell of freshly laundered sheets! There's nothing nicer than crawling into bed. Why deprive yourself of this little pleasure? At Bonsoirs, we tell you everything about the correct frequency of washing sheets, plus some tips to keep them soft for a long time.

Why change your sheets at least three times a month?

Changing the sheets regularly is a question of comfort, but also of hygiene. In fact, the bed can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria, which also gives off bad odors.

Accumulation of dead skin

During sleep, we toss and turn in the sheets. The friction of the skin against the fabric increases desquamation, that is to say the elimination of the superficial layers of the epidermis. This is why in the morning, we find small dead skin cells in the sheets. However, this dead skin attracts dust mites, which can be dangerous for people who suffer from allergies and asthma.

Yellow stains and bad odors

Night sweating, saliva and sebum are the cause of the yellow stains that we sometimes notice on sheets and pillows. In addition to being unsightly, these yellow stains can also give off bad odors in the room. These can in particular permeate the hair.

3 times a month: the ideal frequency for changing bed linen

Changing the sheets every 7 to 10 days, so 3 times a month on average, is a good frequency. This includes changing the fitted sheet , the pillowcases and/or bolster, as well as the flat sheet .

If you use a duvet cover rather than a flat sheet, it must also be washed at the same frequency. If, on the other hand, you put a flat sheet and a duvet cover in your bed, you can wash it less often. Indeed, as the duvet cover is in less contact with the skin, you can change it every 15 days.

What is the right temperature to wash sheets?

The more Bonsoirs sheets are machine washed, the softer they are. Why deprive yourself in this case? Note that it is not necessary to wash the sheets at 40°C to keep them clean. However, remember to separate the white sheets from the colored ones in the machine.

40°C for daily washing of sheets

The recommended washing temperature for Bonsoirs sheets is 40°C. This is valid for cotton percale , cotton sateen and washed linen sheets . With a little detergent, this is a sufficient temperature to kill germs and get rid of bad odors.

With Bonsoirs sheets, there is no need to add fabric softener. Thanks to their natural and quality fibers, our sheets become naturally softer after each wash. In addition, the extra long fibers and tight weave of our sheets prevent pilling, a common phenomenon with lower quality fabrics.

60°C for stained bed linen

If your sheets are stained (blood, perspiration), you can put them in the washing machine at 60°C. A little tip is to rub the stains with Marseille soap before putting them in the wash. On the other hand, washing at 90°C, sometimes recommended for white cotton sheets, is absolutely not necessary. High temperatures only cause additional energy consumption and will not remove stubborn stains, such as rust, for example.

When to throw away your sheets?

The fibers chosen in the making of Bonsoirs sheets ensure high resistance. To keep them even longer, it is recommended to dry them naturally rather than in the tumble dryer. As for when to throw away your sheets, it is linked to different factors.

Outdated bed linen

Outdated sheets are often one of the main reasons we throw them away. But be careful, fashion is cyclical. If you really can't stand your old bedding sets anymore and want to make space in your wardrobes, then now is the time to recycle them.

Faded colors

When sheets are not of good quality, they tend to become dull from being put through the washing machine. But it can also happen that the fabric changes appearance due to the sun's rays and even the moon's rays. The colors are then faded and are no longer really aesthetic. Note that if the fabric is not worn out, you can make new sheets using a natural dye.

Persistent stains

Despite several washes and Grandma's various tips, the stains are still visible? Unfortunately, you will have to resign yourself to parting with your sheets. Unless you give free rein to your creativity, by transforming a fitted sheet or a flat sheet into pillowcases for example.

Worn sheets

It can also happen that the sheets are torn accidentally, caught in the metal structure of the bed for example. Over the years, or even decades, the fabrics will also eventually wear out. It can start with small holes, and one day it ends up in tatters!

Recycle rather than throw away

Either way, rather than throwing away your sheets, consider recycling them . At Bonsoirs, it is important to us to give new life to your old jewelry. All you have to do is send them to us and we will take care of upgrading them.
