Did you know that your pillowcase can become a real ally for your skin and hair? This is mainly the case for cotton and silk sateen pillowcases. At Bonsoirs, we explain the difference between the two fabrics and how they are beneficial for you.

Cotton or silk satin: what are the differences?

With their silky and soft touch, you could almost confuse the two fabrics. Although made with natural materials, they are nevertheless very different.

What is satin?

Satin is a weaving framework, that is to say a method of interweaving the weft threads (lengthwise) and the warp threads (transversely). It is this technique which makes it possible to obtain a fine and shiny fabric, very soft to the touch. Weaving threads can be made of cotton, a plant fiber, or silk, a protein fiber of animal origin.

This frame is very often used to make bed linen: sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases. The fabric provides great comfort to sleepers, due to its softness and lightness.

Cotton satin pillowcase

Bonsoirs offers cotton satin pillowcases , sold in sets of 2 and in a wide range of colors. In order to obtain a very good quality fabric, Bonsoirs sheets are made with 100% cotton and extra-long fibers. To make the fabric both durable and soft, the weave, 200 threads/cm2, is fine and tight. The cotton satin pillowcases can be machine washed at 40°C.

Silk satin pillowcase

Nowadays, in textile workshops, silk is increasingly giving way to cotton for satin garments. However, you can find silk satin textiles on the market, but the names are sometimes misleading. Indeed, to be qualitative, the fiber must be natural. However, there is artificial silk, also called viscose, and polyester or microfiber “silk touch” fabrics.

Natural silk must have a significant weight, at least 19 mommes for bed linen. It can, unless otherwise indicated on the label, be machine washed at 30°C maximum. This is a somewhat restrictive maintenance task, but necessary to preserve the quality of the fiber.

Benefits of the satin pillowcase for curly hair and skin

Whether woven with silk or cotton, satin has many benefits for fragile skin and damaged and/or overly dry hair.

The silk pillowcase: a beauty accessory for hair and skin

The benefits of silk are due to the fact that it is a protein fiber. Its weaving makes it possible to obtain a fabric:

  • thermoregulatory, regulating body heat and absorbing perspiration;
  • which protects the skin and hair from dehydration;
  • antibacterial and hypoallergenic;
  • soft and smooth, which limits friction on the skin and hair.

For all these reasons, silk satin pillowcases are used by people with hair that tends to dry. This is often the case for curly and frizzy hair, which needs a lot of hydration.

Likewise, silk is considered a material that takes care of the skin. First, because it doesn't leave a mark on the face in the morning when you wake up. Then, because it is protein, it reinforces anti-wrinkle night care.

The benefits of cotton satin pillowcases for skin and hair

Due to its quality weave and fibers, cotton satin has many advantages. First, its benefits are close to those of silk. It is notably endowed with the same thermoregulatory qualities.

Furthermore, like silk, cotton is antibacterial and hypoallergenic. In addition, the cotton fibers used in the creation of Bonsoirs bed linen are STANDARD by OEKO-TEX® certified. This label guarantees that textiles do not contain harmful products.

The fine, tight weave of Bonsoirs cotton satin pillowcases gives them maximum softness. Their smooth surface guarantees you won't wake up with marks on your face. The skin does not suffer from friction during sleep. They are almost essential for people with a lot of hair: the hair is not tangled in the morning when they wake up and is shiny.

Advantages of cotton over silk

Different advantages of cotton can be highlighted in comparison with silk. First, it should be noted that cotton fiber is more resistant than silk fiber. This means that you will keep cotton sateen bed linen longer than silk sheets. In addition, cotton satin is very resistant to washing at 40°C. Your laundry will be even softer after each machine wash.

Also note that, if you don't particularly like the satin appearance, it fades over time. However, the fabric does not lose its smooth side and its thermoregulatory qualities.
